Students Say

To students, Bucknell University is a Goldilocks school: not too big or small, but “just right.” The 445-acre campus is glowingly, goldenly described as well: “A beautiful campus…the sunset is unbeatable and the buildings are so technologically advanced.” Curiosity is a pillar of learning at Bucknell, where the administration “ensure[s] a well-rounded education with experiential learning.” Enrollees are welcome “to study far beyond my chosen major” in all three schools—College of Arts & Sciences, College of Engineering, and Freeman College of Management. Biomedical engineers note their work with orthopedic surgeons on device prototypes, Markets, Innovation & Design students examine sustainability for renovations on campus, and management students treat $3 million of Bucknell’s endowment like their own investment company. Students feel their education at Bucknell “simulates a real-life work environment while also being centered around serving the Lewisburg community.”

Bucknell professors are “all leaders in their field,” and devote time to share their expertise: “[They] are very dedicated and willing to engage with students…on an academic level or just grabbing a coffee to chat.” The 9:1 student-teacher ratio sets the bar for dynamic discussion in small classes, as one observes, “Get[ting] to know my professors personally…makes me more likely to ask questions.” Even with all the attention, students still feel they are allowed the autonomy to learn and make mistakes. They rise to the challenges of “academically rigorous” and “truly stellar” instruction, which fuels the inquisitive mind: ”Everyday class life has proved to keep me motivated and constantly trying to learn in different disciplines.”

Students Say

Students at Bucknell work together in a wide variety of ways to study, improve the school, and advance their “collaborative living and learning environment.” The collegiate atmosphere, described as “extremely supportive and smart, but not overly competitive,” motivates students—“I feel compelled by my peers to work hard”—and the many study groups help to keep “an emphasis on teamwork.”

Students also “prioritize health,” which means many can be found together on the field, from gym workouts to Division I sports. “Many of my peers are athletes,” notes a student; a few have even gone on to become Olympians. A “work hard, play hard” mantra also cultivates a “strong community bond” among students that explains why diversity and equity are so important to students. One student has already taken notice: “I feel…the student body became more diverse…from the time I was a freshman to a senior.” Regardless of similarities and differences, Bucknellians are confident about what unites them, declaring, “[We] all share the same goal: to learn.”

Campus Life

Overview

From The School

Location

Bucknell's gorgeous campus is located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, a scenic region where you can enjoy the changing beauty of all four seasons in a climate that's neither too hot nor too cold. As college towns go, it's hard to imagine a better one than Lewisburg. Like Bucknell itself, it's the ideal size. So you won't get stuck in traffic, but you won't run out of things to do, either.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

For many Bucknell students, their most meaningful academic experiences are the research projects they undertake with faculty mentors.

The University provides many opportunities for students to get involved in research, starting the summer before their first semester and continuing through all four years.

Students who take part in research not only learn about their own projects, they build analytical and critical-thinking skills, leaving them better prepared to take on their first job or excel in graduate school.

This happens in state-of-the-art labs and learning spaces that, at other schools, might be off-limits to undergrads or first-year students. At Bucknell, we're all about opening doors and opening minds.

Off-Campus Opportunities

You don't have to travel far to get out and explore nature. There are eight state parks less than an hour from campus — a fact that our adventurous students see as a welcome challenge to hike, swim, climb, fish and paddle. Explore areas rich with geological and paleontological significance. Gaze up at a night sky unsullied by light pollution. Borrow a kayak from Bucknell's rental center and travel down the Susquehanna River.

With so many great options right here in town, you may never want to leave. But if you're craving a weekend getaway, you can get to New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., in just three hours.

Ready to take your exploration beyond the border? About half of all Bucknell students study abroad, with programs available on six continents. Experience next-level immersion as you study sustainability in Costa Rica, classical literature in Greece or intercultural management in Ireland.

Plan your visit to campus at bucknell.edu/visit.

Students Say

The vibrant campus life at Bucknell “has the perfect balance of challenging academics and a plethora of fun activities [with which] to let off steam.” The University hosts weekly activities; some foster arts and entertainment with concerts and gallery shows; others advance education and careers with guest speakers who are often alumni, a network that “genuinely wants to help out the community that helped them.” Students embrace the cooperative spirit with their “highly involved” leadership and outreach. Many are “committed to making change,” with “amazing research opportunities” starting freshman year, like Bucknell’s chapter of “e-NABLE,” where students rev up MakerSpace’s 3-D printer to fabricate upper limb prosthetics for those in need, and in turn see “a great chance to support and get to know the local community.”

On the weekend, students kick back with a movie, break a sweat on a hike, or venture off the quad to “let loose” outside of campus. Many partake in Super Saturday, “an all-day party hosted by the fraternities where everyone is welcome.” Bucknellians can “easily walk downtown” for the restaurant and bar scene or go kayaking and biking. Whatever the interest, group camaraderie abounds: “There is always someone who will happily join you.
